We all need a break once in a while ;) BGP can get very tedious, as it sometimes seems like it is never ending. There is always one more option or command or rule. Just take a step back, practice the fundamentals, then move deeper in.

Good luck on Wednesday! My one tip is to walk when drinking water (if you stop for some). Drinking from a plastic cup while running is a tough skill lol

BSCI covers a pretty good deal on BGP. I find there are a lot of "gotchas" in BGP, and what I mean is there are a lot of things you just have to watch out for. Things like when to use route reflection, considerations with confederation, and all the little 'add on' commands like next-hop-self, ebgp-multihop, and when to use them all. The books will tell you WHY you use them, and labs will help you know when/where to use them. You just have to remind your self that BGP is very un-dynamic. Almost everything is specifically configured.

Out of all the protocols, I say I end up troubleshooting my mistakes in BGP more than anything else (other than weird redistribution scenarios). Its so easy to forget a command.

I'm thinking the hookah bar might be fun for labs (short ones, definitely no longer than 1 hour), and for watching CBT Nuggets or Trainsignal. I think anything else and it would be too dark or too distracting. :) I'm planning on getting a hookah, some hummus, and a beer and watching trainsignals and playing with GNS3. :D

I'll have to see if I can sneak into one of the university libraries here...there are a few smaller universities here and I might blend in...besides unless I'm checking something out, I doubt they'll care that I'm not a student.

I never liked starbucks either, they are always way too busy and noisy I can't believe anyone gets anything done there. I never thought of a hookah bar, that would actually be a pretty relaxed place to chill out! Might be a little dark for books though.

My favourite spot was a university library. The reason I think its better than a public is that its usually bigger, theres always someones wifi to steal, and has lots of variety in study areas, with some being very private and cozy. They also are sometimes open much later.

Yup, that is essentially what PIM does, and why I usually just throw it everywhere. The reason I say it probably isn't best to do that in the real world, as large networks would be a hassle if you only need Mcast in certain parts of it. Also, its probably a security risk (like everything seems to be lol) to have it where you won't need it/want it.

Hmmm...if multicast always works the way it should, shouldn't it prune traffic only to those links that have subscribers to the group downstream? This would seem to mean that it would be fine to put the PIM mode on any interface unless you specifically don't want multicast traffic going down it, even if it is a path to a subscriber...

There you go again, Rob...making me think! ;)

AD are something you need to know for written tests, and thats about it. In lab or even real situations, as long as you understand what an AD is, and take it into consideration when working with multiple routing protocols over the same domain (which honestly isn't that often), you can get by fine. Even if you don't remember the AD of say EIGRP, but you want OSPF routes instead, just let the EIGRP install, take a look a the AD of the route, and configure OSPF accordingly. The convergence speed is fast enough to not really waste much time.

That said, the reason something like EX-BGP is a lower AD (which you would think OSPF or something would be trusted more right?), is because EX-BGP is something that was 'forced' in manually. Meaning if a route is learning it, it probably isn't automatic like OSPF, and was specifically designed. Why IGRP > OSPF I have no idea lol

oooo Yummy Mcast!

In labs I usually make a habit of just throwing the PIM mode on well, everything lol. Usually you can just get away with it unless it states otherwise. Probably not best in real world, but those are two different things.

A lo interface is pretty common for an RP, for a few reasons. I personally think its good practice for the entire network to reach loopbacks anyway (for management purposes), so its something that you can forget to do if thats not already present on a network.

Thanks, Aragoen...I added both a search and a calendar, so hopefully that will help. I've also started adding separate pages for the good links I come across in my studies both to give myself a central repository and hopefully share them with others. Good luck on your BSCI!
